Meet Calvin Smith

Entrepreneur. EOS Implementer. Recovering know-it-all.

I've started, bought, built and nearly broken enough businesses to know a simple truth: business is hard. I've had wins. I've done some dumb shit. I've hired the wrong people. I've chased the wrong opportunities. I've had businesses grow and businesses hurt. I'm still doing it every day — and here are the things that have actually helped.

Calvin Smith, Founder & Business Growth Advisor

The story

Clarity came from discipline.

My first venture was NOWDiagnostics, a medical diagnostics startup I co-founded while still in grad school. There I learned how to raise capital, build a team and launch a product into a heavily regulated market. I also learned that starting a business is the easy part.

Next came nearly ten years as owner of CertaPro Painters of Northwest Florida, my training ground. The business brought great people, loyal customers and real pride. It also brought chaos, burnout and expensive lessons about leadership, ego and culture. I take full ownership of those lessons, and they shape everything I do today. They also inspired my upcoming book, Business Is F'n Hard: How I Created (and Nearly Destroyed) a Really Cool Small Business.

What I'm doing today

Four hats. One operating discipline.

EOS Implementer, EOS Worldwide

I help leadership teams put the Entrepreneurial Operating System® in place so they get aligned, stay accountable and actually make progress. I focus on three groups:

  • Franchisors and franchisees: systems that scale, so everyone knows what “good” looks like
  • VC firms and founder teams: turning chaos into clarity and one shared plan
  • Entrepreneurial nonprofits and accelerators: running with the same clarity they teach their founders

Operator and investor

I'm a founding partner at ScaleSource, which connects growing companies with world-class global talent. I also own The Grey Barn, a commercial landscaping roll-up in Northwest Arkansas, and I'm a franchise owner of Signarama and Superior Fence & Rail of Arkansas.

Community builder

I'm Chairman of the Board of the Startup Junkie Foundation, which supports hundreds of entrepreneurs across Northwest Arkansas.

Podcast host

On Business Is F'n Hard, I have honest conversations with entrepreneurs about what gets left out of the highlight reel: the bad hires, the cash crunches and the “dumb tax.”

Here's why I care

Talent is everywhere. Freedom shouldn't be rare.

I believe talent, ambition and a get-it-done attitude exist everywhere, even where resources don't. My mission is to help founders, especially underserved ones, build businesses that give them more freedom.

I'm bringing EOS® to leaders who need structure, clarity, and accountability — no matter where they are in the world.

Why am I doing any of this?

I want more entrepreneurs to build businesses that create freedom instead of taking it away.

If sharing one of my mistakes, tools, relationships or lessons helps someone get there faster, this whole thing is worth doing.
